Did you hear the one about the software engineers who took the day off to play video games?
On Monday, Wube Studio released a new Factorio game on Steam. By Tuesday, American players were into the game. The release led to the highest ever simultaneous participation rate for one day on Steam, a popular video game sales site. At one point, over 100K users logged in to play.
That number included the Research and Development department of a company. They used a PTO day to play the game. The entire team took the day off, as a result, even the ones who weren’t playing. One friend logged in to watch everyone else!
In a new series I will feature stories about my life with a computer geek. My term, not his. He prefers software engineer. He’s also going to tell you some of his stories.
I’ll also talk about living with disability from time to time. I’m calling it “I Married a Nerd and Other Tales.”
Please join me on this new feature on Tuesdays.
I’m also changing my Friday Classroom. That’s where I preach economics for those of you who skipped, forgot, or hated economics (and now find that you really need to know) to Thursdays.
Cheers,
Nikki
By the way, if you’re on Medium, I’ve posted a few stories you might enjoy. Here’s one on my experience teaching: https://medium.com/@nikki.m.finlay.
NOTE: I don’t get compensation from any of the companies mentioned in this story.
